Pavakkai Poriyal

Pavakkai Poriyal/Bittergourd Curry, cooked with onion, tomatoes and spices. Bittergourd is used in Asian medicine, in treating diabetes and help digestion. Here is the Indian style Bittergourd curry..

Ingredients:
  • Bittergourd/pavakkai - 4
  • Onion - 1
  • Green Chilly - 2
  • Tomato - 2
  • Curry Leaves - 2
  • Mustard - 1/4 tsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 strand
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Hing/Asafetieda - 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilly powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Sambar powder - 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt
  • Oil
Method:
  1. Cut pavakkai/bittergourd into thin slices.
  2. Boil water with turmeric powder, salt and cook pavakkai for 5 mins
  3. Heat pan, add oil, mustard, urad dhal, curry leaves, cumin seeds and hing
  4. Saute green chilly, onion and tomato
  5. Add boiled pavakka and all powder from ingredients list
  6. Cover and cook for 15 mins by stirring it in intervals
  7. Serve hot with rice
