Channa masala

Chana Masala

Channa masala / Choley masala delicious, spicy, tangy, protein-rich and famous Indian curry made with Garbanzo / Chickpeas 


Serves:4


Ingredients:
  • Garbanzo/Channa - 1-1/2 cup (soaked overnight and cooked or canned beans)
  • Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Onion - 1/2
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Hing/Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
  • Oil/ Butter  - 1 tbsp
  • Salt - taste
  • Dry feneugreek leaves/ Kasoori methi - 1 tbsp
  • Lime juice - 1 tbsp
  • Cilantro - handful
Grind to paste:
  • Onion (yellow) - 1/2
  • Tomato - 4
  • Green chilly - 2
  • Garlic -2 cloves
  • Ginger - 1/2 inch piece
  • Cashew - 5
  • Cinnamon - 1 piece
  • Clove - 2
  • Cardamom - 1
Method:

  1. Grind all ingredients listed under "Grind to Paste" to fine paste without adding water
  2. In pressure cooker / pan , add oil or butter and fry cumin seeds, Asafoetida, finely chopped onion and cook till onion is translucent
  3. Add ground paste, turmeric powder, red chilly powder, salt and fry till raw smell subsides and oil separates out
  4. Now add cooked garbanzo with 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 1 whistle
  5. Open pan when pressure is released, add chrushed dry fenugreek leaves
  6. Squeeze lime juice and garnish with cilantro
  7. Serve hot with any Indian bread like Paratha / Roti / Naan / Poori or with Bread sandwich
