Karuvepillai Poondu Kuzhambu


Karuvepillai Poondu Kuzhambu, South Indian gravy made from fresh curry leaves and garlic simmered in tamarind sauce. Good combo with white rice or dosa.

Serves:4

Ingredients:

  •     Garlic - 2 bulbs
  •     Curry leaves - 1 cup
  •     Tamarind - blueberry size
  •     Onion - 1
  •     Tomatoes - 2
  •     Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  •     Fenugreek seeds- 1/4 tsp
  •     Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  •     Dry red chilly - 3
  •     Kuzhambu powder/Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
  •     Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  •     Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  •     Salt
  •     Gingelly oil - 2 tbsp

Method:
  1.     Heat pan with little oil and fry curry leaves and garlic separately
  2.     Keep few cloves of fried garlic aside    
  3.     Make paste with remaining garlic along with fried curry leaves
  4.     Soak tamarind in water and squeeze out the pulp
  5.     Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and dry red chilly
  6.     Saute chopped onions and tomatoes
  7.     Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder and cook till oil separates
  8.     Add tamarind water and bring to a boil
  9.     Add ground curry leaves garlic paste
  10.     Cook till gravy is thick and finally add gingelly oil
  11.     Serve hot with white rice and papad
