Tomato Kurma

Tomato Kurma / Thakkali Kurma, simple South-Indian Kurma made from onion and tomato cooked with Indian spices, goes well with Idli, dosa or roti.


Serves: 4


Ingredients:
  • Onion - 2
  • Tomato - 4
  • Cilantro - handful
  • Cinnamon - 1 
  • Cloves - 2
  • Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 strand
  • Salt
Grind to paste:
  • Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Channa dal - 3 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
  • Red chilly - 4
  • Grated Coconut - 1 tbsp
Method:
  1. Heat little oil, fry all ingredients listed under "grind to paste" and grind to smooth paste by adding little water and set aside
  2. Heat pan, add oil, cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds, curry leaves and fry till spices start to change color
  3. Add chopped onion and fry till translucent
  4. Add chopped tomato and fry till oil separates
  5. Add ground paste, salt to taste and 1 cup water to get the consistency of kurma
  6. Allow for a boil, garnish with chopped cilantro and serve with idly/dosa/roti
